The Tallest Man
The tallest man in medical history for whom there is irrefutable evidence is Robert Pershing Wadlow. He was born at Alton, Illinois, USA, on February 22, 1918, and when he was last measured on June 27, 1940, was found to be 2.72 m (8 ft 11.1 in) tall.
The tallest living man officially is Sultan Kosen, from Turkey with a height of 8'1" (246.4 cm) tall. He was measured by Guinness World Records in September 2009. However Zhang Jun Cai, who has not been officially measured yet might be taller.
The tallest woman who ever lived was Zeng Jinlian from China, who was 8'1.75" (248 cm) tall. The tallest living woman is Yao Defen, also from China, who is 7'8" (233.7 cm) tall.
However, others have claimed to be even taller. People of extreme height have always been exaggerating their true height. In history many giants have claimed to be the tallest man alive, or even the tallest man ever. This trend still continues today. I have received a very friendly e-mail from James Kempster, Frederick's great-nephew. He explained that most of the information available on the internet about his great-uncle Frederick Kempster is pure fiction. James has written a more accurate early history of Frederick's life based on family stories and first-hand records of the Barnardo Organization. I have downgraded Dora Helms from 6'10" to 6'7" tall. Closer inspection of the images with Kaatje van Dyk suggest that she was only 6'7" at her peak (which was before she became one of the van Droysen sisters).
