Oskar Von Hindenburg height

Postby PolishGiant » 13 Jan 2017, 17:37

Hello,
This is my frist post in this forum. I'm a historican and im very interested in ww1 history. When i was reading some articles about fieldmarshal Paul von Hindenburg who was 196cm tall, i saw photo of his son Oskar also an officer, who seems to be taller by his father, possibly over 6'7"(200cm). Do you have any information or suggestions how tall he could be?

Hi! Welcome to the forum! The photos you provided in your post lacks the kind of information you need to do good height estimations. There is no clear clues to establish the parrallel lines (such as walls or ceilings). That being said, judging by the eye I would agree with you that the man to the right (Oskar) would probably stand more than 200 cm tall if the man to the left (Paul Von Hindenburg) was indeed 196 cm tall. Still judging by the eye, I would also confess that the man Walking behind them would also be approx. 2 meter tall. This would mean that the photo is showing three men, all standing around 2 meter tall.

I doubt that Paul Von Hindenburg was 196 cm tall. Looking at various photos at google image search he seem to be a man of more standard measurements. There are photos of him standing next to Adolf Hitler who was just 174 cm tall and Hindenburg seem to be no more than 5 cm taller.
So, my conclusion is that Paul Von Hindenburg was more likely approx. 180 cm tall.

Paul von Hindenburg's dates are 1847 to 1934. And photographs of Hindenburg standing with Hitler date from 1933 or 1934, when the older man was entering his late 80s. So height conclusions based on those photos probably mean little. Very old people stoop or contract, period. The Prussian writer Marion Donhoff described meeting Hindenburg during her childhood, in the middle of World War I, and being surprised that such a tall, heavyset man should walk with such tiny steps. Hindenburg's official height was 196 cm and he does look like a very tall man in World War I photographs (and he was old even then). He has to have been taller than 180 cm in his prime.

This is photo of Hitler shaking hand with Hindenburg. Hitler was 175cm tall so from this photo i can say that feldmarshall is at least 20 cm taller.

Otto Skorzeny was 1,90-1.96m tall, stand next to hitler.

In photo from 1933 Hindenburg was 86 years old so its not weird that he may be little shorter due to age like Clint Eastwood who is 193cm tall but on photos looks more like 185cm.

Im very suprised how tall were most German officials and officers before ww2. Just look on this photo of Paul Von Hindenburg with Oskar Hohenzollern on right:
Image
He looks at least 10cm taller so he would be 2,06! On this photo with his family, his sons look at least same height!

Im very interested in this field, do you know more very tall kings, dukes, generals and other officials? From what i know there were several giants:[b] Peter The Great 2,04, Maximinus Thrax probably gigantism 2,44cm, Ernst Kaltenbrunner 1,94,Tsar Nikolai Pavlovich 1,90-2,00, Edward IV 1,94 in XV century england...

Hitler has bent his head so the difference is rather 10cm than 20. So it works out: Hitler~1,75m, Paul v. H. (old)~1,85, Oskar v. H. ~1,95.

Its matter of perspective i think. Look at this one:

On other photos he looks at least more than 190cm..

MacQuail and Barth's giant are different persons - Barth's giant is in Vienna.
